From Research to Practice: Making Science Communication Matter
Many scientists are expanding their efforts to engage public audiences, but how effective are those efforts?
The growing demand and need for effective science communication, evolving engagement tools including social media, and rapid changes in information access raise a wide range of questions among scholars about the practice of science engagement.
What: The University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute will hold a SciComm Exchange featuring Dr. John Durant, director of the MIT Museum and adjunct professor in MIT’s Science, Technology, & Society Program. Durant will summarize recent work to understand the relationship between science communication research and how science engagement is actually practiced. Durant argues these two areas are not well connected at present. Durant studies public perceptions of the life sciences and the role of informal media, such as museums, in facilitating public engagement with science and technology.
When: Friday, December 2, 12-1pm. Lunch will be provided.
Where: Memorial Union, Room 300, University of Rhode Island, 50 Lower College Road, Kingston, RI
